Pfft. IT guys... what do they know about being a gearhead...

everything in all these modern computer controlled cars lol

lol he doesnt even try to pretend. When he ordered this plate he was like "get it? get it". Lol of course I get it

Haha, he may be able to understand how to get to the information in the computers, but how to interpret that information?

I kno rite
Thankfully I've moved up from IT guy to systems engineer. I could never "get" cars as a desktop tech ;)

I should hope they could figure it out. BUT u never know.

Hah. I wish we were automagically injected with the knowledge of car computers...

Systems Engineer sounds like a fancy title for "More Important IT Guy"...
Therefore, still no knowledge of cars whatsoever.

Makes sense, probably why I've been hammering and banging on this Saab for a year and still don't have the block out
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:15 |

That's it! You can't just "uninstall" a block, or "clear the cookies" to start over...

IT guys need old school cars. For me, nothing chases away the day to day drudgery of being in IT like hammering on a carbureted hunk of cast iron.

Well in my defense: I would have had it out already but I am having troubles finding up-to-date firmware bits for my engine hoist and my torque wrench keeps getting the blue screen of death

seen in Louisville KY, 2012...

Ah, I see. Perhaps you should recompile your kernel to add the modules you need. And write some firmware. You should be good enough with C to make en engine hoist work... Then run memtest86 on your torque wrench, I bet it's the RAM.

haha now that is brilliant

Try explaining why you can't just drop a big intercooler in a new turbo to get lower temps and thus more power. There a so many sensors that cross check that the intercooler interferes with the radiator and the engine temp goes up. So the computer pulls timing or throttle and thus you get a net zero so the car does not overheat the block. I even showed someone that with data from a Dash Daq and I got an idiot look from the guy. "Duh but bigger intercooler dur."

At least its not a ten year old Kia.

Lets get the facts straight here.
IT= customer support
Systems Administrator = Managing systems and performing work.
Systems engineer = knowledgeable capable engineer at the full sense of the word. Capable of both design and execution.
Systems architect is the last step, before director.
I am by title a Systems Engineer. Not that I hold myself on a pedestal. Its just another job and a step closer to my own goals.
However in my younger days I also drove a mustang and still do. The difference was that mine was black coupe with leather and a manual trans and a v8 engine. I never liked personalized plates on my cars period. It makes a vehicle easier to identify for one and sometimes that brings unwanted attention when your a young buck, at least in my indirect experince.
And yes people who work with computers can be gear heads. Some of the gear heads that you guys perceive as being gear heads would blush at a typical IT guy who is a gear head, most IT guys are detail oriented and posses quite good cerebral power, along with capabilities to understand and work on modern or older vehicles.

hmmm I will have to figure that out as far as nomenclature. You shame me because my father was a director level when he was in it for 35 years. Damn
